… I was, however, thinking of constructing a workshop around the (antiquated) idea of proportion extending to ideas about how artists make decisions about the size and scale of a work either intuitively (but with a little more exploration on what an intuitive process is perhaps connecting it to ideas of improvisation), to harmonic theories, geometry, the human body (Le Corbusier), by connecting work to everyday objects, like Donald Judd’s use of the size of North American Sheet stock (4’ X 8’) to determine the dimensions of many of his work, and finally how data visualization in the digital age can provide solutions for artists. I’d like to work with students on understanding that process and maybe finding new ways to think about it or at the very least to help them become more attentive to it.
