Shape Shifting (how to become phantasmic) with Lucas Odahara

In this 6 block seminar, we look at a few examples of embodiment in histories of ghosts, queer theory and amerindian cosmologies as a strategy to think of one’s own work. We will interpret the current social and work restrictions as part of a larger crisis, one that was already among us and has been assuming new forms: colonial violence, racial capitalism, environmental exploitation, global pandemic – if the crisis shape shifts into new forms, how can we understand one’s own work in this process of constant becoming within it? Based on the idea of shapeshifting, present in different people’s imaginaries across space and time, the seminar will culminate in the transformation of the participant’s existing works into ‘new bodies’. The focus being the unphysical realm and alternative modes of connecting beyond physicality in other modes of showing work. The studio, the streets, the museum, the screen – how to understand one’s practice and its potential in assuming new forms under new conditions.

The course consists of 6 sessions + final presentation. In the first three sessions we will discuss topics pertaining the idea of the phantasmic departing from a screening and previously selected reading material. The remaining sessions are individual and group critique, accompanied by the analysis of a previously selected art practice. In these sessions we will plan alternative shapes for the participant’s work, to be exhibited at the end of the semester.
